Rappahannock Rugby Club vs. Washington Renegades - 10/15/2005

Courtesy of Pete Murray, Secretary, Rappahannock Rugby Club

We evened our record out to 3-3 on Saturday with a home victory over the Renegades by the score of 37-5. We came out rather flat but scored within the first 10 minutes as Cisco Jimenez dotted the ball down. They were rucking well and stopping some of our backline movements but we were able to steal ball in the tackle. I believe Matt "Bucket" McCarton followed up Cisco with a try off of a nice assist by Danny O'Hara (yet again). That was followed up by a penalty kick by Cisco and a final try of the half by Cisco. At halftime, the score was 18-0.

The second half we came out a little flatter and the Renegades seemed fired up. They were doing well at the rucks, winning them consistently but they couldn't break the gain line. Finally their scrumhalf or flyhalf broke the gain line and stepped in behind the ruck to break away for a nice try of about 50 meters or so. This narrowed the gap to 18-5. We were able to pick it up a little and started to win the rucking battle and were able to turn out multi-phase rugby. Bucket scored yet another try off of a 5 meter scrum during which the pack was busy working, driving, straining and pushing while he stood at the back breathing easy, enjoying a light breeze and wiping his brow while sipping some Perrier. Then, at the most opportune time, he picked up the ball and fell over into the try zone for the score. Another break down in defense on our part almost let the Renegades score another long try but a goal line tackle by one of the backs stopped them short. The rest of the match was spent in their half and we managed to dot down two more times, once by Mark Smith and once by yours truly, Pete Murray. Final Score 37-5.

Upsides:A win is a win. We had decent (but not great) numbers at the match, and we won on a messy, sloppy home pitch. Enough said.

Downsides:We came out flat, and we were lazy on defense at times. The consensus seemed to be that we did not play as well or as hard as we are capable of.

Bonus: Congratulations to our Man of the Match, Greg "Junior" Hartman! He had his coming out party with flawless lineouts and a good all-around effort making him MOM.

Next Match:
We play at Winchester next Saturday the 22nd. This should be a tough, but winnable match. As always, we need to have everyone show up for practices, and especially, FOR THE MATCH! Let's get away from taking small numbers to the away games. We need all the help we can get.
