Rappahannock Rugby Club vs. Winchester Cannons - 10/15/2005

Courtesy of Pete Murray, Secretary, Rappahannock Rugby Club

We travelled up to the Apple Capital with 17 bodies and one ball. We were not sure what to expect as our starting fullback and inside center(s) were not making the trip. We finally got organized with Tom "Gunny" Gunning playing out of position at inside center and Thomas "Schmoopie" Lee moving from wing to fullback. We started our warm-up and the backs went off to run through some plays while the pack imagined it had a ball and went through lineouts and penalty plays. Then we joined up and ran through some unopposed phases of play. At this point we began to wonder where the ref was, as we were about 10 minutes out from kick-off. After standing around for those 10 minutes, Winchester announced that the ref was in Annapolis and wouldn't be arriving anytime soon. So, Winchester's president said he would ref and promptly called Andrew Fowler offsides even before the match began. Ok, ok, he didn't do it BEFORE the match, but he did develop a habit of calling Andrew offsides.

The match started and Winchester had the downhill slope of the field. We were able to hold their charges off and break out into their end of the field with some good rucking and ball retention. Tony "Maximus" DiMaio was finally able to break off with a good run to dot one down and put us on the board. The rest of the half Winchester used the slope of the pitch to their advantage and kept us pinned back in our end. Just before the half ended, Danny "John Stockton" O'Hara busted through the Winchester line and dished off a nice pass to Chris "Kidd Chris" Schultz for a try. The half-time score was 12-0, Rappahannock.

The second half started with us getting to go downhill on the pitch. We seemed to pin them back in their half of the field for much of the half either by blocking kicks (Larry Stevens) or making good open field tackles (the backline). The scoring started to pour in with Thomas Lee touching down a try, Matt "Bucket" McCarton scoring one, "Kidd Chris" getting his second try of the match, and "Bucket" closing out the scoring with another try. The final score of the match was 36-0.

Upsides:We had better numbers than the last few away games. Thanks to everyone who made it. Despite not having our full squad, and having several playing out of position, we managed a strong win against a good opponent.

Downsides:Only ONE ball to warm up with before the game... What happened there?! We need to stay organized and focused on the details. We'll chalk this mistake up to the management.

Bonus: Congratulations to our Man of the Match, Tom "Gunny" Gunning! "Gunny" played well at inside center and he showed up to the party so he got the green jacket and MOM honors... and was late for dinner with the folks.

Next Match:
We play Western Suburbs at home. Judging by the scores, they've played better against our mutual opponents than we have. This is going to be a tough match to win, so let's get everyone at practice, and everyone to the match.

I haven't gotten word on whether or not any pictures were taken at this match, but if I get any I'll post them.
