We traveled 13 strong up to Winchester yesterday and two of Gunning's mates from West by-god Virginia traveled down to give us our 15. It was quite the hodge podge but as kickoff rolled around we all fit neatly into our roles for the match. Winchester started with some strong rucking but Mike "Baby Shamu" Shannon picked a loose ball and took off for about a 60 meter try, with Cisco Jimenez making the 2 point conversion kick to put us up 7-0. Winchester did answer in kind but it wasn't as pretty! 7-7 Winchester then proceeded to camp out in our end again but some advantageous play by our backs pinned them back inside their 22 and Mike "Raf" Raphael jumped on a loose ball in their try zone to put us up 12-7. Alas Winchester did storm back with some more strong rucking (getting to be repetitive, eh?) in the last 10 minutes of the half. A penalty on us gave them a set up from 10 meters out with 30 seconds or so left in the half and they were able to punch it in for the lead 12-14.
The second half didn't start well. Winchester was able to score pretty quickly and a friendly touch judge gave them the conversion that was a clear miss, extending their lead to 12-21. As the second half started to wear on, our backs were able to get more touches on the ball and "Baby Shamu" scored his second try of the day to bring the score to 19-28 (we don't need to highlight all of their scores, I mean this is about us is it not?) after another successful conversion by Cisco. We started to get our senses about us and had several nice ball movements down the pitch. Kicking for touch became a bit of a challenge with the wind whipping about and the ref always seemed to give us a mark in the middle of a wide pitch. Line outs weren't our bag either as they had a tall, lanky fellow who seemed to win all of their lines and some of ours! But not to fear, as we were down but not out. The backs again worked over their back line with superior passing and speed to get the ball out to Danny "Insert Nickname Here" O'Hara on the wing and he dotted the ball down in the back of the try zone to bring the score to 24-33. As time began to wane, we seemed to have started to wear them down but the clock did not favor us, too much to cover in too little time.
Final Score Rappahannock 24, Winchester 33
Some high points were: Our backs proved to be very good when they had the opportunity with the ball. Greg "Junior" Hartman won all of his hooks and stole two or three of their hooks, this in his second match, ever.
Some low points were: Fitness. Our rucking. It can be stated that the two go hand in hand.
